47 year old Barack Obama has been elected as the first African American president of the United States of America, taking key battleground states Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
The president-elect campaigned on a ticket of change, hope and unity, a message believed to open up a new front in US politics, bring a more multilateral, diplomatic approach to current world problems, and go some way to bridge the race divide in America.
President Obama won by 349 Electoral College votes (he needed just 270), which will see him sworn in as the 44th president on January 20 2009.
President Obama, alongside wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, attended a victory rally in Chicago. He declared to the quarter of a million cheering supporters that his victory showed that the "dream of our founders" is alive.
"We are, and always will be, the United States of America," he said.
"It's been a long time coming but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America,".
