President-elect Barack Obama's full speech

47 year old Barack Obama has been elected as the first African American president of the United States of America, taking key battleground states Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

The president-elect campaigned on a ticket of change, hope and unity, a message believed to open up a new front in US politics, bring a more multilateral, diplomatic approach to current world problems, and go some way to bridge the race divide in America.

President Obama won by 349 Electoral College votes (he needed just 270), which will see him sworn in as the 44th president on January 20 2009.

President Obama, alongside wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, attended a victory rally in Chicago. He declared to the quarter of a million cheering supporters that his victory showed that the "dream of our founders" is alive.

"We are, and always will be, the United States of America," he said.

"It's been a long time coming but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America,".

President Obama revealed that he had received an "extraordinarily gracious" call from his Republican rival John McCain, who he said had "fought long and hard" for this campaign and for his country.

"We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader,"

"I congratulate him. I congratulate governor Palin for all that they've achieved.

"And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the month's ahead."

President Obama also said of his wife "my best friend of the past 16 years, the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady, Michelle Obama".

"Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."
