US comedian Bernie Mac died in hospital on Saturday, aged 50, following complications from pneumonia.
"This is a very sad day for many of us who knew and loved Bernie, but heaven just got funnier" said actor Don Cheadle.
The Chicago-born comedian whose real name is Bernard Jeffrey McCullough was admitted to hospital on 1 August, and all indications were that his condition was improving so his death was unexpected by many.
Samuel L Jackson, who recently completed shooting the musical comedy Soul Men with Mac said "I feel blessed to have shared years of friendship with Bernie Mac,"
"My sincere prayer is that his family will be comforted by the warmth of love from all of us who knew and respected this man" he added.
Mac made his first film appearance in the Damon Wayans movie Mo' Money in 1992.
He also starred in the TV sitcom Moesha which led to his own TV show. The Bernie Mac Show went on to win several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations - and won the comedian a Peabody Award for excellence in television.

Mac was married for more than 30 years, lived in Chicago and is survived by his wife Rhonda, daughter Je'Niece and a granddaughter.
