Formed in October 2006, Natural England has the vital mission of ensuring that our natural environment is conserved, enhanced and managed for the benefit of present and future generations. In particular, it aims to promote biodiversity, protect the landscape, secure the provision of facilities for enjoying the countryside, and promote access to open spaces and outdoor recreation.
To oversee Natural England, Defra Ministers appoint a Chair and a Board of up to fifteen members. The Board enjoys collective responsibility for determining Natural England’s strategic direction and policies, making certain that it discharges its statutory duties and providing effective and efficient leadership. Naturally, the Board focuses strongly on the stewardship and deployment of the public funds entrusted to the organisation, requiring a high level of probity and financial acumen among all its members.
We are seeking two Board Members. To fulfil this role, you will require a sound track record in management and business planning, including either professional expertise in audit and risk or deep knowledge of corporate governance. At the same time, you will be capable of building productive relationships with diverse stakeholders, contributing to discussions at strategic level and experienced as a committee or non-executive Board Member. Above all, you will be passionate about the conservation of the natural environment, strongly interested in the principles of sustainable development, and familiar with public sector frameworks and operations.
For further information and an application pack, please contact publicappts@defra.gsi.gov.uk or telephone 020 7270 6166 quoting reference PAPPT 59.
Closing date: 1 September 2008, noon.
The UK Government and devolved administrations are committed to improving the diversity of the boards of their public bodies and welcome in particular applications from members of currently under-represented groups, including women, people from ethnic minority backgrounds, disabled people and people from all age groups. All public appointments are based on the principle of merit.
